The Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH) has been advised to make it compulsory for newborns to be screened for diseases from the ‘Primary Immunodeficiency’ (PID) group. PID or Congenital Immune Deficiency Disease requires early treatment in an effort to cure patients and save lives.
According to Paediatric Immunology and Allergy Specialist of the Institute of Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Dr Intan Juliana Abd Hamid, the existing examination of newborns is not enough to detect the presence of PID. Commenting further, she said that PID screening on newborns had been carried out a lot abroad while Malaysia was currently only in the development stage.
In the sharing on the Awani Pagi as well, Dr. Intan Juliana also called on the community and the government to recognize PID as a problem, as well as join forces to increase awareness, diagnosis system and cure treatment that can be accessed by all parties.
